A New Documentary Chronicles the Life and Music of the Trailblazing Artist

WEB Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between

Garland Jeffreys, the mixed-race Brooklyn native whose music defied industry norms, is finally receiving his long-overdue recognition. A new documentary, "Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between," will world premiere at DOC NYC, America's largest documentary film festival.

Jeffreys, born in 1943, emerged onto the music scene in the 1970s with a unique blend of rock, reggae, blues, and soul. His music, infused with themes of racial identity and social commentary, challenged industry norms and earned him a cult following.

The documentary, directed by award-winning filmmaker Muhal Richard Abrams, delves into Jeffreys' life and music, revealing his struggles with racism, addiction, and industry indifference. It features interviews with Jeffreys, his family, friends, and fellow musicians, as well as rare archival footage. Through its intimate portrayal, the documentary establishes Jeffreys as one of America's most under-recognized musical greats.
